Introduction
Serialisation allows manufacturers to create unique serial numbers for every item produced. This ensures each physical product can be tracked individually once it enters customer inventories. This guide explains how to set up serial formats and create serials in batches.
Serial Formats
Before creating serials, each manufacturer defines one or more serial formats. These determine how serial numbers are generated.
A serial format can include:
Prefix
Date of manufacture
Batch number
Customer reference
Purchase order number
Incrementing number
Country of origin
Suffix
You can choose:
Which components to include
The order in which they appear in the final serial number
Example format:
ECNZ0001
“EC” → prefix
“NZ” → country of origin
“0001” → incrementing number
