Product & SKU Level Data

First off, the terms:

Also considered as 'Product Family', as 'product' can be a broad term.

We consider a 'product' a grouping of SKUs which are largely the same or share the same main construction/features.

Also be considered a 'variant' of the 'Product', i.e. the size, length, colour, etc.

Scannable has built a 'default template' of the data fields for each product category. This means, we have pre-selected the data fields we perceive to be the most relevant or valued to either manufacturer, reseller or equipment owner. You can choose to use these, leave them blank, or even soon hide them from view.

The data fields (length, weight, colour, diameter, etc) can be set at the 'Product Level', which gives you the ability to update all SKUs/variants of the product with one update. Or the data fields can be updated at the 'SKU' level, so you can define the difference between the SKUs, i.e. set the length, colour & image differently on each SKU, but leave all other data fields set at the product level.

Real-life examples:

A rope manufacturer has to decide whether all variants (typically length, diameter, and colour) should sit within one product, "Super Strong Rope", or if they want to lay out the products & SKUs more independently by creating three products for the three different diameters available, as the diameter is a key data field, and can impact certifications or device compatibility, making the different diameters of the same rope actually considered different 'products'.

A carabiner manufacturer has to decide whether all variants (typically gate type, colour, captive bar, etc) should sit within one product, "Super Strong Carabiner", or if they want to lay out the products & SKUs more independently by creating three products for the three different gate types available, as gate type is a key data field, and can impact certifications or device compatibility, making the different gate types considered different 'products'.
